The study of diabetes was conducted on 5269 people aged 30 and older from 191 regions in 21 countries. All are showing signs of "pre-diabetes" or abnormal blood sugar, shows half of them will develop type 2 diabetes within 3 years.
This drug called rosiglitazone or Avandia, used in three years may reduce the risk of diabetes to 62%. This is a group of drugs thiazolidinediones, are currently being used to treat diabetes once diagnosed.

Participants were used Rosiglitazone and follow the advice to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Within three years, only 12% of people with diabetes using rosiglitazone, compared with 26% patients taking placebo. Rosiglitazone also been found to help bring glucose levels returned to normal in 51% of participants versus 30% on placebo.
Beneficial effects of Rosiglitazone was found in all patients, especially those who most clearly in weight.
